Corneal Transplant
Corneal Transplant
Corneal transplants are performed for a variety of reasons. They are the most successful solid organ transplant performed in the world, with an overall success rate approaching 90%. Many people with corneal blindness have the opportunity to see again because of this procedure.

As seen above, the cornea is removed from the eye and replaced with a donor cornea from the eye bank. It is held in place by small stitches.

Here is demonstrated a corneal graft held in place by stitches.

Above is a before and after of a patient who underwent corneal transplantation for a corneal disorder which caused significant scarring.
Corneal transplantation is a fairly commonly performed procedure. It is now an outpatient procedure and the success rate is usually very good, depending on the diagnosis for which it is being performed.
