Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment
Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment
Damage from diabetes called retinopathy is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world today. It is caused by years of uncontrolled sugar levels which damage the small blood vessels throughout the body such as those in the eye, brain, kidneys and legs.

Above is shown a typical picture of diabetic retinopathy. There are hemorrhages scattered throughout the retina as well as edema and exudates, or fluid collections.

Above is shown a retina with diabetic retinopathy immediately following laser treatment or panretinal photocoagulation (PRP). The peripheral retina is lasered in order to cause the new blood vessels to go away or regress.
Laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy is an in-office procedure. Usually it takes between 15 to 30 minutes and is usually performed in two or more sessions. Dr. Vincent may choose to administer a local anesthetic to make the procedure more comfortable.
